Helping Bright Students Show What They're Capable Of
Gifted and Talented testing rewards familiarity as much as raw ability. Our CogAT and ITBS preparation builds confidence and test-format comfort so your child's true reasoning ability comes through on test day.
What Are CogAT and ITBS?
CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test)
Measures reasoning ability across three areas — Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal. Used to identify gifted students in elementary and middle school. It primarily assesses thinking and reasoning, not memorized knowledge.
ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills)
A broader achievement test measuring reading, math, language, and science knowledge. Some schools use it as a GT screening tool alongside or instead of CogAT.
CogAT Structure by Level
- Level A (K–1): Nonverbal batteries only — picture analogies, visual patterns
- Level B (Grades 1–2): Nonverbal continues, verbal batteries begin
- Level C (Grades 2–3): All three batteries — Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal
- Level D–H (Grades 3–12): Verbal Battery (vocabulary, verbal analogies, sentence completion) • Quantitative Battery (number analogies, number series, equation building) • Nonverbal Battery (figure classification, figure analogies, spatial visualization)
What Constitutes "Gifted": Typically CogAT scores of 97th percentile or higher, or ITBS scores of 90th–95th percentile or higher (thresholds vary by district).
Why Families Choose Tutor of Dragons for GT Testing Prep
Many bright students underperform on CogAT and ITBS not because of ability, but because the question formats are completely unfamiliar and the timed environment creates pressure they've never experienced before.
We Build Familiarity, Not Just Practice Volume
Rather than simply running through worksheets, we teach students to recognize the reasoning pattern behind each question type — verbal analogies, number series, figure classification — so unfamiliar-looking questions become approachable rather than intimidating.
We Address the Real Barrier: Confidence Under Timed Pressure
Some of the brightest students struggle most with perfectionism and timed-testing anxiety. We build speed and accuracy gradually, in a low-pressure setting, so students walk into the actual test having already experienced — and mastered — that time pressure.
Realistic, Honest Guidance for Families
Preparation can meaningfully boost scores by helping students demonstrate reasoning ability they already have — but it can't manufacture ability that isn't there. We're upfront with families about what preparation can and can't do, because trust matters more than an easy sale.
How Our GT Testing Preparation Works
CogAT/ITBS Preparation Includes
- Practice questions for each battery type (Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal)
- Test format familiarization
- Speed and accuracy balance training
- Practice tests with analysis
- Specific coaching for weak areas
- Anxiety management strategies
- Parent education — what to expect and how to support at home
Preparation Approaches
Comprehensive Program
8–10 weeks — recommended for students starting 2–3 months early; 1 hour weekly, all relevant batteries, 2–3 practice tests, parent education included
Intensive Program
4–6 weeks — for students starting 1–2 months before; 1.5 hours weekly, focused test familiarization, 2 practice tests
Private Tutoring
Fully customized, parent observation available, detailed feedback
What We Cover, Section by Section
Verbal Battery (CogAT)
Vocabulary, verbal analogies, sentence completion using context clues
Quantitative Battery (CogAT)
Number analogies, number series, equation building from word problems
Nonverbal Battery (CogAT)
Figure classification, figure analogies, spatial visualization
ITBS Areas
Reading comprehension and fluency, spelling and language mechanics, math computation and reasoning, science and social studies knowledge
Realistic Expectations
Preparation can improve scores by roughly 1–2 standard deviations by building familiarity and confidence — but it cannot completely change inherent ability. Students with strong reasoning abilities benefit most from the confidence and format familiarity preparation provides.
Common CogAT/ITBS Challenges We Address
- Timed testing anxiety — a common issue for bright, perfectionistic kids
- Fear of a single wrong answer derailing performance
- Slow processing speed under time pressure
- Difficulty with intentionally "tricky" question formats
- General unfamiliarity with standardized test-taking
Who Benefits From GT Testing Prep?
- Students who are academically bright but nervous about testing
- Students unfamiliar with standardized testing formats
- Students whose teachers have recommended GT testing
- Students who scored borderline on a previous assessment
- Students with attention or focus challenges that affect timed performance
Frequently Asked Questions About CogAT/ITBS Prep
Can test prep really help my child qualify for a gifted program?
Preparation helps students demonstrate reasoning ability they already have by building familiarity with the question format and reducing test anxiety. It typically improves scores by 1–2 standard deviations, but it can't manufacture ability that isn't there — we're honest with families about that distinction.
What's the difference between CogAT and ITBS?
CogAT measures reasoning ability (Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal batteries) and is primarily used to identify gifted students. ITBS is a broader achievement test measuring reading, math, language, and science knowledge, sometimes used alongside CogAT for GT screening.
How young can my child start preparing?
CogAT Level A is designed for kindergarten and 1st grade with nonverbal-only content, so even very young children can benefit from age-appropriate format familiarization.
How do I know if my child needs test prep or is ready as-is?
A brief diagnostic conversation can help — many bright students simply need familiarity with the format and some anxiety management rather than content instruction.
What if my child doesn't qualify for the GT program?
Not qualifying doesn't reflect a lack of ability — GT cutoffs are intentionally very high, and many capable students don't meet them. Your child continues in regular programming, and some districts offer re-testing later.
